Christian, Daniel and Alan are drawn to San Francisco on the cusp of the digital age. They find work as erotic performers in the emporia of the city. Through outcaste and avant-garde connections at The Ashbury Theater, they meet the artist Mordred Vienna. Like them, she arrived from somewhere else. Now, she uses her body as her canvas and the focus of her installations. Together they make new performances as they move from the twilight world of the homosexual into the computer systems of Silicon Valley and on to Hollywood and mainstream success.
The Queer Diary of Mordred Vienna is a work of queer fiction. It uncovers a journey from obscurity to recognition, from exile to inclusion and mutual acknowledgement. Moving from the country to the city and from the margins to the center, the book plots an alternative history of LGBTQ liberation. Like life, it has erotic content.
The Queer Diary of Mordred Vienna edition by Russell Christie Literature Fiction eBooks
In "Queer Diary", we follow a number of disparate characters who are drawn together by destiny and situation into a meaningful and caring community of what can only be termed "intersubjectivity" in the fullest sense of the word. Christie successfully fosters a totally unique atmosphere in this book, picking up cues from experimental literature, romanticism, erotica, fantasy, and science fiction.Put simply, Christie is an imperceptible genius (which is distinct from an unsung one, in that his genius is so carefully cultivated that it would be certain not to be picked up by any standards that might be set for it), and an apt reminder of the fact that in our wondrous day of near-universal access to information, there are many of his kind. This book is his gift to a people and a generation, we who have been oppressed by overmarketed hedonism, alienating "hyper-specialization", and worst of all, a sense of helpless paranoia festering behind it all.
In the face of all these things and more, Christie cultivates a naïve, yet mature benevolence that doesn't go running off into the woods a la Thoreau et al. when the going gets tough. And neither does it "knuckle up" for a fight. Over the course of "Mordred Vienna", we see a collection of characters, all flawed, neurotic, etc, who end up banding together commune-style, to practice true love. The style of this book itself is similarly unique. It is transcendentally immanent. It goes beyond its flaws without negating them, and that is truly a one-of-a-kind thing.
So then, if you want a completely unique, and spiritually important experience that won't beat you over the head with dogma or new-age frosted flakes, look no further. And be sure, after reading it, to give it some time to settle. You most likely won't "get it" right away. Its meaning is extremely subtle. So subtle, in fact, that we could easily be convinced that it doesn't exist.
We can only hope that Christie will be publishing more works like this in the future.

The Queer Diary of Mordred Vienna edition by Russell Christie Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A story exploring the ins and outs of gay life in early nineties San Francisco. The lead characters; Dan, Alan and Christian are very well drawn and likable. Illustrated by technological modern art of diverse varieties the novel fairly scoots along exploring the byways of some very trippy mindspaces. A journey from individuation and alienation to intersubjectivity and communion with the other who is not other and the whole world itself. Erotic sensuality is explored in tandem with existential philosophy; a heady and delicious combination! If I ever meet the author over the horizon of the present I will be sure to buy him lunch. May it be as tasty as his novel!
A novel which explores not only gay identity, but identity and love, fully and without constraints, The Queer Diary of Mordred Vienna details the experience of learning to live in the world, an experience which I felt absorbed in as I was reading. Throughout 'The Queer Diary . . .' Russell Christie speaks with a voice simultaneously large and personal, epic and conversational. The warmth and immediacy of the narrative voice allows full access to the characters' experience and world, and the message of the story, though clear and important, is housed within a story of adventure and discovered treasure, at times surreal, at others firmly and unavoidably grounded in reality, in equal measures warming and gripping.
Highly recommended. I'll be reading it again.
